Manufacturing Manager
MA - Littleton
Opportunity Snapshot
"Leaders don't force people to follow--they invite them on a journey"--Charles Lauer
Emotional intelligence-the ability to understand your own and other people's emotional makeup well enough to push them to the next level-is the sine qua non of leadership... If you have perfected the art of coach-style leadership, consider this high-impact opportunity to lead a team of 40 shop floor personnel and optimize manufacturing operations at one of the defense and aerospace industry's most respected and innovative suppliers!
Curtiss-Wright Controls' Littleton, MA operation is an ISO certified manufacturer of printed circuit board assemblies, cable and wiring harnesses, power control and distribution subsystem assemblies, and a broad range of support services. While other manufacturing sectors are contracting in this recessionary economy, we're growing by leaps and bounds. We're in the early stages of creating a Lean/Six Sigma environment and to be a good fit for this opportunity, you will have a solid mechanical engineering background and ideally some knowledge of continuous improvement methodologies, along with some exposure to SMT as we transition from through-hole to surface-mount technology platform.
What Else You'll Bring to the Table
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related technical discipline; advanced degree is plus.
- Minimum 8-10 years of related manufacturing experience within Defense or commercial arenas.
- Strong leadership and influencing skills to motivate the team.
- Excellent analytical skills with a strong working knowledge of problem solving, root cause analysis and associated solution implementation.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to facilitate cross-functional project teams.
- Computer Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (including Word, Excel & PowerPoint) and SAP.
- Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification is a plus.
What's in It for You
- Influence & impact - while you will be inheriting a team that is performing well, you will leverage your expertise to make a good thing even better as you train and mentor the team to achieve and sustain operational excellence. At the same time, you'll be able to "make your mark" on our organization as you track down the hidden opportunities to improve customer service and drive on-time delivery.
- Career growth -- we place a strong emphasis on employee development and succession planning; in fact this is a high potential opportunity and we'll likely be grooming you for bigger and better opportunities, such as Director of Manufacturing, as we continue to grow.
- The best of both worlds -- within the global resources of Curtiss-Wright we operate as a small, entrepreneurial company. We are a tight-knit team focused on teamwork, innovation, and results rather than bureaucratic processes.
- Pride -- employees at Curtiss-Wright are making history and have been doing so since the legendary first flight by the Wright Brothers over 100 years ago. There is a strong sense of pride among our employees in the products and services that we provide--products that not only serve some of the largest, most vital industries in the world, but also save lives. Our work has an impact on our customers, our country, and the world.
- Excellent compensation -- in addition to a competitive base and generous incentive plan, we offer a comprehensive benefits package that offers a variety of health and savings/retirement benefits.
More About Your Role
If you're a good fit for this position, you already know most of what the job entails. However, to be sure we're providing a complete picture, here are some details.
At our Littleton facility, you will report directly to the Director of Manufacturing and oversee around 30-40 production personnel including a Test Supervisor, Manufacturing Supervisor and 3-6 team leads. We'll look to you to roll up your sleeves and become very familiar with the people, equipment, and processes on the production floor and identify opportunities and innovations to drive continuous improvement. You can also expect to travel (around 5%) to other sites to aid in the transfer of knowledge as we get underway with our SMT implementation.
During the first year, you'll focus on contributing to the company's quality objectives including:
- Customer On-time Delivery
- Superior Customer Quality Rating
- Increased Return on Capital
In a nutshell, you'll spend about 50% of your time on the floor driving day-to-day production issues; another 20% collaborating in meetings; 20% at the desk with strategic planning; and the remaining 10% mentoring and training the team leads. Specifically, your responsibilities are to:
- Assign and review work of assembly employees in conjunction with production schedules as defined by the master production schedule.
- Plan work force requirements based on business backlog.
- Assure Supervisors provide oversight, guidance and support to production workers in a manner which will maintain a safe, efficient, productive factory.
- Interface with production control on the coordination of schedules which includes manpower and equipment.
- Ensure employees receive adequate training to complete their tasks in accordance with procedures.
- Interface with manufacturing engineering, quality, test and program management to ensure that scheduling, planning and forecasting of assembly requirements are met.
- Ensure factory personnel maintain a productive attractive workspace.
- Provide support for new business quote process.
- Develop and operate within budgets.
- Schedule pre-approved overtime to accommodate production commitments.
Keys to Success
To excel in this role you will need strong technical savvy, grounded knowledge of our products and processes, and a keen eye for identifying areas of improvement. You'll also be the kind of hands-on leader that truly enjoys getting out on the floor and being involved in the day-to-day production. Further skills that will assist you in this role include:
- Innovative problem solving skills -- your knack for looking at an issue from all angles will serve you well as you develop and implement creative solutions that help us optimize our products and operations and close in on ever-advancing customer quality requirements.
- Excellent teamwork & interpersonal skills -- as you work closely with your immediate team to establish goals and priorities and keep the production floor running smoothly, you'll also collaborate with, influence, and enlist the support of others throughout the organization to thoroughly understand the issues and requirements at hand and to implement your improvement initiatives in a collective effort.
- Independent initiative -- in addition to autonomously carrying your projects through to completion, you'll take point in developing goals and driving action plans to achieve our objectives ahead of schedule.
- Flexibility -- with excellent multitasking ability, you'll showcase your capacity to expertly balance day-to-day issues while driving continuous improvement activities in a fast paced and dynamic, customer needs driven environment.
If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!
